What do Millennials and Gen Zers Believe about Abortion?

Vinea Research and YouGov conducted a survey for Students for Life with 1,216 Millennials and Gen-Z (ages 18-41 years old at the time of the survey) registered to vote.

The survey sought to answer these questions:

  • Where along the abortion acceptance spectrum do people place themselves?

  • Do people believe there should be limits on abortion?

  • Do people believe abortions should be prohibited at any developmental milestone or fetal age?

  • Do they believe Roe should be codified? Do they support or oppose the outcomes associated with Roe?

  • What are the views on some legislation-related topics?

  • What are views on some details related to the abortion pills?

MILLENNIAL AND GEN Z BELIEFS ABOUT ABORTION

Preliminary results suggest that this age group predominantly:

  • believes abortion is an important issue when voting

  • supports some level of access to abortion, but with significant reservations

  • is not fully informed on current abortion laws

  • support holding abortion providers to certain standards to protect the health of women

The survey results indicate that abortion is an important issue for many younger adults when it comes to voting.

Graphic that reads "53% say that abortion is among the top 3 issues that matter when voting for a candidate"

MILLENNIAL AND GEN Z BELIEFS ABOUT access TO ABORTION

The research identified that the majority of Millennials and Gen Z support some level of access to abortion during at least some stage of pregnancy.

Graphic that reads "76% believe abortion should be legal at some stage of pregnancy"

However, the research indicates complex views, as much of the data shows that Millennials and Gen Z have significant reservations about abortion.

Graphic that reads "only 23% believe taxpayer's money should be used to directly fund abortions"
Graphic that reads "50% of respondents support the born alive act"
graphic that reads "only 18% of Millennials and Gen Z oppose the Born Alive Act"

MILLENNIAL AND GEN Z BELIEFS ABOUT “CODIFYING ROE”

Survey takers were asked “Do you support or oppose taking the abortion provisions that existed under Roe. v. Wade and turning them into a federal law? This is referred to as “codifying Roe.”

Then, survey takers were then asked if they supported each of the following laws:

  • Allowing abortions to occur through all 9 months of pregnancy

  • Allowing abortion to be funded, in part, by taxpayers

  • Allowing abortions for any reason (e.g., medical, financial, preference, convenience)

  • Preventing states from enforcing health and safety standards for abortion providers to follow

After responding to each of these points, they were asked “Assuming the points in the prior question were all part of Roe v Wade, do you support or oppose ‘codifying Roe’”. This time, the number supporting codifying Roe dropped significantly. The number of people who selected “strongly support” was nearly cut in half, and the number who opposed it more than doubled. This indicates that young adults are not informed on the full implications on codifying Roe. When informed of the ramifications, more Millennials and Gen-Z oppose it than support it.

Graphic that reads "Although 52% of Millennials and Gen Z initially supported "codifying Roe", after learning the legal implications of what that means, only 37% supported codifying Roe."

MILLENNIAL AND GEN Z BELIEFS ABOUT STANDARDS FOR ABORTION PROVIDERS

The great majority of those surveyed indicate that they believe that abortion providers should be held to certain standards to protect the health of women.

Graphic reads "60% of respondents supported limiting the acquisition of abortion-inducing drugs to in-person clinical visits in order to prevent misuse"
Graphic that says "9/10 say it is important to have ultrasound screenings to check for ectopic pregnancies before distributing abortion-inducing drugs"
Graphic that reads "93% said it is important to require women to receive a blood test to check her Rh blood status to know about the risk of future pregnancies"
Graphic says "90% say it is important to require those who distribute abortion pills to also provide medical containers to collect the products of abortion and return to the provider for disposal"
